Leonard Beeghley received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Riverside, in 1974. He has written seven books. Two of his texts have become standard references in the field. The Emergence of Sociological Theory (with Jonathan H. Turner & Charles Powers) is in its 5th edition and The Structure of Social Stratification is in its 4th edition. Beeghley has eclectic interests. His general strategy is to look at historical and cross-national data in order to extrapolate structural explanations of social phenomena. His most recent book, Homicide: A Sociological Explanation, illustrates this procedure. It was featured at an “author-meets-critics” session at the meetings of the American Criminological Society. He is now studying the European Union and the United States. Beeghley has taught at the University of Florida for 32 years. He has been selected to teach at the State University System’s London Study Centre and the University of Florida’s program in Brussels.
