My current research focuses on the social demography of families,
fertility, and aging. I am particularly interested in contemporary
trends and attitudes about family, implications of childlessness and
singlehood, and contemporary work-family dilemmas. My research has
examined the psychological well-being of middle-aged and older adults,
especially the potential impact of childlessness and singlehood in
later life. I am continuing this research through an in-depth,
qualitative study of long-term single adults and analyses of national
data on childless adults in midlife. I am also using both national data
and an original, university-based survey to examine attitudes about
childlessness, marriage, and gender issues. My current cross-national
research project compares attitudes among university students in the
United States and Turkey (with Dr. Zeynep Copur, Hacettepe University,
Ankara).
