the Sociology Department at the University of Florida! This year,
2006, marks the 100th anniversary of the first sociology course taught
at the University of Florida and the 80th anniversary of the creation
of an independent Department of Sociology. Today, our
department offers an undergraduate major as well as graduate study
leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. We are a large, diverse,
and growing department. Our 600 undergraduate majors ranks
us among the larger undergraduate sociology departments in the
U.S. Despite our size, we are committed to offering one-on-one
personal service to each student, and we pledge to remain flexible so
that each student can follow a program tailored to his or her
interests.
If you are a prospective, current, or past student, you'll find the
undergraduate section of our web page a very useful introduction to our
major and minor programs. And, I hope you will share with me any
thoughts you have on ways to improve our undergraduate program.
High-quality
undergraduate education is only one of the goals of the Sociology
Department. We have also offered programs leading to the M.A. and
Ph.D.
degrees in Sociology for more than 50 years. The graduate section
of our web page
provides information on our areas of specialization, application
requirements, and procedures.
Finally,
we strive to provide a stimulating intellectual environment for our
students and faculty. Information about the teaching and research
interests of our faculty can be found in the Faculty section of the web
page. The department sponsors a colloquium series, and
information on upcoming talks is available on our Announcements page.
I
hope our web page will answer all your questions, but if it doesn't
please contact us.
